Tuffnells Parcels Express are delighted to have been named as a finalist in the prestigious Logistics Awards after being nominated for the ‘Large Operation’ award for businesses of 500+ employees.

The Logistics Awards from SHD Logistics, now in its 4th year, recognises operational excellence and celebrates the very best companies within the logistics and supply chain sectors.

The award is given based on a series of criteria, including a finely tuned supply chain, evidence of an operation that’s flexible, future-proof and efficient and is given to businesses who have been using initiative to improve their business strategy.

David Etherington, National Transport Compliance Manager at Tuffnells said of the nomination "Our top two priorities are Health and Safety and Transport Compliance and this award underpins our commitment to this for the present and for the future.”

Chris Ward, MD adds “We’ve made great leaps in improving the processes of our business and being nominated as a finalist in this award is great news and will give a real boost to the many individuals and teams making our business a safe and great place to work. After just achieving the best peak period for Tuffnells in over a decade, we’re certainly feeling like our strategy of moving towards operational excellence is picking up pace, so any external recognition is the cherry on the cake.”

Blast from the past

Traffic manager, Darren Duffy at our Plymouth depot has been digging into the history of ‘the man behind the van’, Harold Tuffnell – known as ‘HJ’.   In his own time, using skills gained from researching his own family tree, dedicated Darren sourced more information on the Tuffnell family.

Using the 1890 census and a 1901 version, here’s what we’ve learned.

Harold James Tuffnell was born in 1887 to James Tuffnell of Hertfordshire (born 1852 – 1918) and Elizabeth from Shrophire, following the birth of Jospeh and Mabel, before becoming big brother to Frank and Alfred.

Harold worked in and in 1912, met and married Ethel Bowser, who was 2 years his junior, and they remained married for many years, eventually, Harold became father to Margaret, Dorothy and Derek.

James and Harold worked for Charles Crookes, a steel manufacturer of East Cliffe House, East Bank Road, James as a coachman and Harold as a groom.

Harold started Tuffnells of Sheffield, as it was then known, with just £100 and one horse and cart and registered a LTD company in 1936.

Ethel passed away in 1953, and Harold sold the company the same year to EJ Shaw. Harold died in May 1963 aged 77.

We are delighted to know more about Harold Tuffnell and the information has been invaluable. Darren said of the findings:

“It was very interesting to look back into the history of the family, the size of the family, where it all started and how life was in them days. I`m sure 103 years ago the last thing on his mind would be wondering in many years to come whether or not someone would be looking into the history of his family.”

We've had our best peak season yet

Peak trading is a crucial time for any business and it is no different at Tuffnells Parcels Express! Driven by the demands of our automotive and outdoor retailing customers, our Peak period starts two weeks before Easter and runs until after the second May Bank holiday – so we’ve just come to the end of a busy, thrilling period. The great news is, we can now officially announce that this year has seen us have not only a good peak season – but the most successful peak in a 103 year history.

“In April alone, we broke our consignment record three times and our revenue record three times also,” says Chris Ward, MD of Tuffnells Parcels Express.

“We genuinely have the best team in the UK parcel sector and on a daily basis we see so many of our 3000 strong team come together to deliver for our customers – despite the daily challenges.”

In this period, the teams see an increase in the consignments they collect and deliver – up to 20% more than a standard week. This puts a significant strain on all parts of the network – from space in depots, the number of deliveries drivers have to complete and the trunking, but Chris has been visiting the depots and heading out with drivers.

Chris added

“I have enormous admiration for our drivers – they are committed and dedicated but also very demanding of the business, which I appreciate and respect. The better I understand the challenges the drivers face, the better I can support them through targeted investment, as well as making decisions that improve their working environment, their vehicles and their opportunities to learn and grow.”

We are now looking forward to planning an even better peak period in 2018!

Tuffnells Parcels Express are delighted to announce an increase in sales which have been driven from the improved services and wealth of investments made in recent months.

In 6 months alone there has been a £1.5m investment in people and operations, with an increase of 5% in sales. The data shows that new customers are working with Tuffnells instead of competitors, with service targets being met and improved on from 2016. The business has been in a period of high investment and has aimed to deliver real value, with the launch of a new website, improved customer tracking and plans to develop their digital suite further in 2017. The EU service, offered through a strategic partnership with Net Express Europe allowing Tuffnells Parcels Express to deliver to over 25 EU destinations has also been growing and is up 40% vs last year.

Chris Ward, MD reflected on the news

“We’ve made real investments in people and process and it’s great to see that we are already reaping the rewards. We have shown we are excelling in our delivery financially, but importantly we’re not skimping on how we get there. We’re making steady, sustainable improvements in all areas of the business and we are seeing results in customer service, retention, recruitment and interest in our business. We are of course very happy with the 5% increase shown in sales in the first half of the year alone.

I know from being out at depots that with the enthusiasm and skills we have, we are in a great place to maintain this momentum and end the year on a high.”

Chris Ward, MD of Tuffnells Parcels Express has plans to invest over £25m in the training, health and safety and development of the Tuffnells Parcels Express brand.

In the wake of news of falling stock prices for businesses like DX Delivery, Tuffnells Parcels Express, owned by the Connect PLC remained steady.  Chris Ward, who took the position of MD in 2015 has been keen to push investments in the business.

"Whilst other carriers are in a state of flux, with mergers, falling stock prices and acquisitions making the sector seem volatile, at Tuffnells Parcels Express, there is no uncertainty around our stability.  We were bought by the £bn turnover Connect Group in 2014, and ever since we have grown in strength, with rising stock prices, increased customer satisfaction levels and huge investments, such as the £25m we put into our fleet, and the £2m in training, safety and development.

Our service is stronger than ever and we continue to improve everything we do to give our customers the very best experience possible. We’ve just launched a brand new ‘MyTuffnells’ customer area. MyTuffnells is available to all registered customers and allows customers to quickly and easily monitor their own deliveries.  Our enhancements now recognise every returning customer, giving an ‘at a glance’ summary of today’s consignments, the ability to reveal the acceptance signature for every order as well as news, advice, and a quick way to get IT support.

I believe this is yet another step towards making a real customer-centric organisation.
Importantly –we’re making real investments in our people. A brand new £3.3 million Sheffield depot is already being built, and we’re working hard to reward the colleagues who stay with Tuffnells and make a real difference.  The future looks incredibly bright."

Tuffnells Parcels Express are delighted to announce they are now the sole UK partner of NetExpress Europe - the longest established delivery network in Europe. This strategic partnership, which launched on Nov 2nd 2016, means Tuffnells can now uniquely offer a significantly expanded and improved product portfolio through the NetExpress Europe system.

This makes Tuffnells a truly comprehensive one-stop shop - with an extensive array of both domestic and international delivery options available to existing and new customers who trade on the Continent. It also vastly increases Tuffnells international delivery capabilities with membership of this network giving them a much stronger and more robust European presence.

Practical day-to-day customer benefits include increased visibility through integrated Track and Trace IT systems - so deliveries made by any partner company can be viewed at any point door to door, not just when the delivery is signed for. <<There is also a neat cultural synergy, with each partner priding themselves on doing more than simply delivering parcels; also focussing on challenging shapes, like bicycles, and lengths up to 3m.>>

As Chris Tresadern, Tuffnells Sales and Commercial Director noted; everyone that likes what we do locally will like this expansion of our service too. They'll get the same level of Tuffnells service they've come to expect - and they'll still be dealing with the same driver and using the same despatch IT etc. But now they have so many more delivery options to help them maximise their business opportunities in Europe. And for new customers, this is just the perfect time to get on-board and start using a delivery company who can honestly claim to be a real one-stop shop.

NetExpress Europe successfully unites many of the leading independent delivery companies of their individual domestic markets. Together, partner revenues total 2.1 billion. And the network produces an impressive array of statistics year-on-year; covering 24 EU and EFTA countries, with a fleet of over 23,500 vehicles making over 793,000 shipments via 820 depots and 14 strategically placed hubs.
